Join us for our monthly "Lunch with the Rabbi" class where each year a group of dedicated congregants meet and discuss a provocative Jewish book. This year we will be reading Rabbi Katz's own Yochanan's Gamble: Judaism's Pragmatic Approach to Life. The book makes the claim that rather than have the intractable, strident discourse of today's politics, we need to embrace the pragmatism of the Rabbis, which began with Yochanan ben Zakkai's decision to trade Jerusalem of Yavneh. In essence, we can benefit today from the model of the ancient rabbis who make messy compromises, lead (but not too far ahead of their flock), change laws if they don't work, and preserve peace within their community in order to better function in our day of division.
The class meets monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month beginning October 21st. Brown bag lunch at 12pm, hybrid learning at 12:30pm
