On Tuesday, January 27 at 7:30pm,
Temple Ner Tamid will host a timely and substantive conversation with

Bill Treanor and Paul Fishman
on law, free speech, and higher education, with particular attention
to contemporary debates over the role of the federal government
in determining what is taught at universities.

Bill Treanor, a leading constitutional law scholar
and longtime dean of
both Fordham Law School  and Georgetown University Law Center, brings deep expertise in university administration and the roles of both universities and the government in moments of political and cultural conflict. He was at the center of a controversy where the Interim US Attorney demanded that Georgetown Law "eliminate all DEI from your school and its curriculum" (to quote his letter to the law school).

Paul Fishman, former United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey and a respected voice on civil rights and public law, offers a complementary perspective shaped by years of prosecutorial leadership and engagement with complex questions of institutional accountability.

Together, they will explore how colleges and universities can uphold robust debate while meeting their legal and moral obligations to protect students from discrimination and harassment, examining where the law draws boundaries—and where it leaves room for judgment—amid intensifying campus tensions.

Do You Believe in Miracles?
Articulating a Personal Theology

with Rabbi James Feder

January 22, 29, February 5 at 7:30pm
at Temple Ner Tamid

Do you believe in miracles? How about heaven, or Creation, or God?
So often, the fact that Jewish tradition holds multiple and competing
views means that we are not pushed to articulate our own.
But what do you believe? And can you defend that belief?
In this course, participants will be exposed to a range of theological views
on a variety of topics.
And then, they will be invited to wrestle,
to work through their own personal theology and put it into words.

This is a hybrid class.
Register for in person here.

Register for ZOOM here.

Creative Liturgy Workshop with Rabbi James Feder

The prayers we recite by rote each week were not handed down fully formed from heaven—they were written by real people, reaching for words to express their hopes and fears, their loves and losses.
Over time, those personal prayers became the shared liturgy of the Jewish people. But sometimes, the ancient words of others don't quite resonate, which is why the process of prayer writing must be ongoing.
Join Rabbi Feder once a month at 10:00am
to explore new liturgy being written for our current moment
and take a hand at writing some yourself.

Join The Chesed Committee!

Chesed” means “doing the right thing,”
and there are many ways you can do the right thing

The Chesed Committee responds to the practical and emotional needs of congregants by:

  • offering friendly visitors, amongst other things

You can participate in these Chesed activities occasionally,
or on a regular basis, according to your own schedule.

If you are interested in any or all of these activities
or have ideas for new ways the Chesed Committee can help,
let us add your email to our growing list of Temple Ner Tamid members

Karen Frank, our Congregational Nurse,
offers two kinds of informal discussion groups a month, on Zoom,
one for Caregiving Family Members, and one for Grandparents.

The Caregiving Group is for adults with aging or ill parents or spouses.
We discuss questions about “how to keep them safe”, “when to get help”,
“where should they live”, “how do I deal with their confusion”.
We meet the first Thursday of the month, at 7:30pm.

The Grandparents group meets to discuss candidly
the real issues of relationships with grandchildren and their parents.
In a Facebook environment, an idealized picture
of these relationships often make us feel inadequate.
We discuss our real experiences in our safe and comfortable small group setting.
We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm.

Please feel free to reach out individually at nursekarenfrank@gmail.com as well.

Tai Chi @ TNT...Thursday evenings 6PM-7PM

Tai Chi is an ancient art that encompasses movement, exercise, meditation, and a delightful way to enhance health. Originating over 2000 years ago, it is often attributed to Lao Tzu, who is also credited with the book Tao Te Ching. Tai Chi serves as a form of movement meditation, skillfully designed to enhance balance and mobility.
With over 20 years of dedicated learning and practice,
Ray Wolfson and Irene Sherman are passionate Tai Chi practitioners.
According to them, 'Our growth within this art
continues through both teaching and personal practice.'

The classes offer a nonjudgmental and enjoyable environment,
understanding that progress takes time and consistent practice.
