Understanding Zionism: A mulit-session class

With Rabbi Marc Katz
November 6th, and November 13th
at 7:30pm

Today people argue over the definition of Zionism.
Is it a Jewish State or a State for the Jews?
Is the purpose of Israel to be a demographic center for the people,
a cultural hub, a political safe haven.
As it happens, some of the fiercest debates about what Zionism
should be happened more than a century ago.
This class will situate us in those debates trying to understand
the people in the room when Zionism first took shape.
We will meet them, read their writings,
and unpack what they might think about the Israel of today.

I’m collecting toys for Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, NJ for my Mitzvah Project.
A Mitzvah Project is a meaningful way to help repair the world (Tikkun Olam), an important part of the Jewish tradition that I have been learning about for the past year while studying for my Bar Mitzvah.  I chose to do this because over the summer I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and have been receiving treatment at this very special hospital every month. I am so grateful for the care I receive and the kind and comforting staff who take care of me.  I also know how lucky I am that I get to go home after just a couple of hours to live a normal life with my family and friends.

Sadly, I also know that most kids at this hospital are not that fortunate.  That’s why I am asking you to donate toys to help get their minds off their situations and help them have a break from being sick kids, to just being kids, with some fun and entertainment while in the hospital.  And with the holidays coming, these gifts are even more important!

Please purchase a gift (s) from one of the 2 wish lists that the hospital has put together.
Additional directions below.

Click here to purchase from the hospital’s Amazon Wish List
Click here to purchase from the hospital’s Target Wish List

Please send your gift EITHER directly to the hospital (default shipping address) with a note “Miles Archer Toy Drive” OR to my house (address below) and we will deliver all donated toys personally in December. The deadline for gifts is FRIDAY DECEMBER 12, 2025

Miles Archer • Goryeb Toy Drive • 41 Aubrey Rd • Montclair NJ • 07043
Thank you so much for supporting my Mitzvah Project!

Creative Liturgy Workshop with Rabbi James Feder

The prayers we recite by rote each week were not handed down fully formed from heaven—they were written by real people, reaching for words to express their hopes and fears, their loves and losses.
Over time, those personal prayers became the shared liturgy of the Jewish people. But sometimes, the ancient words of others don't quite resonate, which is why the process of prayer writing must be ongoing.
Join Rabbi Feder once a month at 10:00am
to explore new liturgy being written for our current moment
and take a hand at writing some yourself.

Polemics, Parallels and Possibilities:
An Exploration of Israeli and Palestinian Poetry

with Rabbi James Feder

December 1, 8, 15 (7:30pm) at TNT
When confronted with an inter-generational conflict like that between Israelis and Palestinians,
it can be easy to forget what’s really at stake: people.
Especially from a distance, this conflict is often spoken of in terms of
geo-politics and historical narratives, but if we want to truly understand what’s happening today,
we need to understand those who are caught up in the violence.
For decades, Palestinian and Israeli writers have taken to poetry
to express their worldviews, their losses, and their hopes.
By placing select poems in conversation with one another, this course aims
to provide new insights into an old paradigm and — perhaps — spark new inspiration.

Learn How to Assist Families
of ICE Detainees

Tuesday, December 2 at 7pm

Join Bella Gerstmann for a 1.5 hr virtual workshop
to learn how to best support those in need.

Register HERE to Receive the ZOOM LINK

Many of the immigrants that are detained daily by ICE in New Jersey
are men who leave behind wives and young children.
The detention of a father and partner is not only a trauma for these families,
but can mean a devastating loss of income, childcare, and support in daily life.
As immigrant rights groups reach the limit of how many families they can assist,
there is more need than ever for community members to step up and volunteer
to support those in their communities that are affected by ICE detention.

CAN! (Comunidades para Americanos Nuevos!) is a nonprofit based in Highland Park, NJ, that offers both direct support to families separated by ICE,
and resources and guidance for others who can do the same.
Community groups can prepare to "adopt a family" in need
that they might identify themselves, or that CAN! might refer to them.

A basic training will give an overview of what needs these families might have,
how these needs can intersect with their immigration status,
and what resources are already readily available.

Karen Frank, our Congregational Nurse,
offers two kinds of informal discussion groups a month, on Zoom,
one for Caregiving Family Members, and one for Grandparents.

The Caregiving Group is for adults with aging or ill parents or spouses.
We discuss questions about “how to keep them safe”, “when to get help”,
“where should they live”, “how do I deal with their confusion”.
We meet the first Thursday of the month, at 7:30pm.

The Grandparents group meets to discuss candidly
the real issues of relationships with grandchildren and their parents.
In a Facebook environment, an idealized picture
of these relationships often make us feel inadequate.
We discuss our real experiences in our safe and comfortable small group setting.
We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm.

Please feel free to reach out individually at nursekarenfrank@gmail.com as well.

Tai Chi @ TNT...Thursday evenings 6PM-8PM

Tai Chi is an ancient art that encompasses movement, exercise, meditation, and a delightful way to enhance health. Originating over 2000 years ago, it is often attributed to Lao Tzu, who is also credited with the book Tao Te Ching. Tai Chi serves as a form of movement meditation, skillfully designed to enhance balance and mobility.
With over 20 years of dedicated learning and practice,
Ray Wolfson and Irene Sherman are passionate Tai Chi practitioners.
According to them, 'Our growth within this art
continues through both teaching and personal practice.'

The classes offer a nonjudgmental and enjoyable environment, understanding that progress takes time and consistent practice.
