The Hardest Ideas in Judaism
with Rabbi Marc Katz
April 23, 30 and May 7 at 7:30pm
REGISTER HERE!
Some of Judaism’s most powerful ideas are also its most challenging.
In this three-part class, we’ll take an honest look at the concepts that
many modern Jews struggle with—ideas that can inspire
deep meaning for some but raise difficult questions for others.
Together we’ll explore the notion of the Jewish people as “chosen,”
the enduring problem of why good people suffer,
and Judaism’s strong emphasis on Jewish community
and distinctiveness in a universal world.
Drawing on biblical texts, rabbinic sources, and modern thinkers,
this class invites participants to wrestle openly with the parts of Judaism
that can feel uncomfortable—and to consider why these ideas
have remained so central to Jewish thought.
Book Discussion with David Denby
Temple Ner Tamid is delighted to welcome
acclaimed cultural critic David Denby,
May 18th at 7:30pm
for a conversation about his newest book,
Eminent Jews: Bernstein, Brooks, Friedan, Mailer.
In this fascinating work, Denby explores the lives and legacies of four towering twentieth-century Jewish figures—Leonard Bernstein, Mel Brooks, Betty Friedan, and Norman Mailer—examining how they shaped American culture while wrestling with questions of identity, ambition, and Jewishness. A longtime staff writer at The New Yorker, Denby brings his signature insight and narrative skill to this rich portrait of influence and complexity. Join us for an evening of thoughtful discussion,
presented in partnership with our local community bookstore.
REGISTER HERE for in PERSON ONLY!
The event is free and open to the public.
This program will be available for streaming on the TNT YouTube channel.

Creative Liturgy Workshop with Rabbi James Feder
The prayers we recite by rote each week were not handed down fully formed from heaven—they were written by real people, reaching for words to express their hopes and fears, their loves and losses.
Over time, those personal prayers became the shared liturgy of the Jewish people. But sometimes, the ancient words of others don't quite resonate, which is why the process of prayer writing must be ongoing.
Join Rabbi Feder once a month at 10:00am
to explore new liturgy being written for our current moment
and take a hand at writing some yourself.

Karen Frank, our Congregational Nurse,
offers two kinds of informal discussion groups a month, on Zoom,
one for Caregiving Family Members, and one for Grandparents.
The Caregiving Group is for adults with aging or ill parents or spouses.
We discuss questions about “how to keep them safe”, “when to get help”,
“where should they live”, “how do I deal with their confusion”.
We meet the first Thursday of the month, at 7:30pm.
The Grandparents group meets to discuss candidly
the real issues of relationships with grandchildren and their parents.
In a Facebook environment, an idealized picture
of these relationships often make us feel inadequate.
We discuss our real experiences in our safe and comfortable small group setting.
We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm.
Please feel free to reach out individually at nursekarenfrank@gmail.com as well.
