"It's Ok to Laugh: Israel and Coping Through Dark Humor"
Wednesday, October 22nd at 12:30PM

In this fun and educational program, Benji Lovitt
explores how Israelis have always turned to humor during even the darkest times, not to be insensitive, but as a coping mechanism.
Through standup, TV/social media clips,
interviews with Israeli comics, discussion, and more,
we'll discover a perspective that's both hilarious and therapeutic,
a morale boost that gives people "permission to laugh".
Feel free to bring a bag lunch.

REGISTER NOW & JOIN US!

Since making aliyah in 2006, comedian/author Benji Lovitt has performed for audiences around the world including Jewish Federations, Hillels, Birthright Israel, and more,

Benji's perspectives have been featured on Israeli television and radio and in outlets such as USA Today, Time Magazine, BBC Radio, The Atlantic, and the Times of Israel.

Understanding Zionism: A 3-part class

With Rabbi Marc Katz
October 30th, November 6th, and November 13th
at 7:30pm

Today people argue over the definition of Zionism.
Is it a Jewish State or a State for the Jews?
Is the purpose of Israel to be a demographic center for the people,
a cultural hub, a political safe haven.
As it happens, some of the fiercest debates about what Zionism
should be happened more than a century ago.
This class will situate us in those debates trying to understand
the people in the room when Zionism first took shape.
We will meet them, read their writings,
and unpack what they might think about the Israel of today.

SPARKS! is a 60-minute musical
rom-com about Lenny,
a tech optimist, and Kitty,
a free-spirited cantor, who meet at a quirky New Jersey inn and impulsively vow to co-create a musical that inspires people to take one small step toward Tikkun Olam.
Their chemistry and big ideas collide when Lenny suggests
using AI to write the show.
With two jaded (and secretly musical) servers nudging them along, the date veers from meet-cute to meltdown to a hopeful, harmony-filled finale.
Equal parts witty and warm-hearted, SPARKS! explores modern love, authentic creativity, and the power of small acts done together.

For my tikkun olam project, I am doing a book drive for Succed2gether, a free tutoring organization in Montclair,
and Novel Futures, an organization started by a GRHS student that distributes books to underserved communities.
I think the next generation of people should read and I fear a world where we spend almost our entire day looking at screens.
I also want to promote literacy and access to books.
I am collecting new or gently used books.
Everything from board books and picture books to books for adults and even SAT/ACT study guides. If you have books to donate, you can drop them off in the collection bin in the TNT lobby.
Thank you! Joshua Arbour

Creative Liturgy Workshop with Rabbi James Feder

The prayers we recite by rote each week were not handed down fully formed from heaven—they were written by real people, reaching for words to express their hopes and fears, their loves and losses.
Over time, those personal prayers became the shared liturgy of the Jewish people. But sometimes, the ancient words of others don't quite resonate, which is why the process of prayer writing must be ongoing.
Join Rabbi Feder once a month at 10:00am
to explore new liturgy being written for our current moment
and take a hand at writing some yourself.

October 11 November 22 December 13
January 24 February 7  March 14 April 25 May 30

Rabbi James Feder will be launching a new Adult B’nei Mitzvah cohort this fall,
REGISTER HERE NOW!

Throughout the coming year, we will meet weekly
on Sunday mornings at 11:30 AM,
with our 1st class on October 12th.
Anyone interested in delving deeper into Jewish tradition and practice,
whether you plan to participate in the Adult B’nei Mitzvah ceremony or not,
is welcome to participate.
Those who have already become Bar or Bat Mitzvah
are also welcome to join, as is anyone pursuing conversion.

LUNCH WITH THE RABBI
Starts on Tuesday, October 21st @ 12:00PM
  Join us for our monthly
"Lunch with the Rabbi" class
where each year a group of dedicated congregants meet and discuss a provocative Jewish book. This year we will be reading
Rabbi Katz's own

Yochanan's Gamble: Judaism's Pragmatic Approach to Life.
The book makes the claim that rather than have the intractable, strident discourse of today's politics, we need to embrace the pragmatism of the Rabbis, which began with Yochanan ben Zakkai's decision to trade Jerusalem of Yavneh.
In essence, we can benefit today from the model of the ancient rabbis who make messy compromises, lead (but not too far ahead of their flock),
change laws if they don't work, and preserve peace within their community
in order to better function in our day of division.

REGISTER HERE!
Going forward, the class will meet monthly on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
Brown bag lunch (dairy or pareve
) at 12pm, hybrid learning at 12:30pm

Karen Frank, our Congregational Nurse,
offers two kinds of informal discussion groups a month, on Zoom,
one for Caregiving Family Members, and one for Grandparents.

The Caregiving Group is for adults with aging or ill parents or spouses.
We discuss questions about “how to keep them safe”, “when to get help”,
“where should they live”, “how do I deal with their confusion”.
We meet the first Thursday of the month, at 7:30pm.

The Grandparents group meets to discuss candidly
the real issues of relationships with grandchildren and their parents.
In a Facebook environment, an idealized picture
of these relationships often make us feel inadequate.
We discuss our real experiences in our safe and comfortable small group setting.
We meet the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00pm.

Join Zoom Meetings

Please feel free to reach out individually at nursekarenfrank@gmail.com as well.

Tai Chi @ TNT...Thursday evenings 6PM-8PM

Tai Chi is an ancient art that encompasses movement, exercise, meditation, and a delightful way to enhance health. Originating over 2000 years ago, it is often attributed to Lao Tzu, who is also credited with the book Tao Te Ching. Tai Chi serves as a form of movement meditation, skillfully designed to enhance balance and mobility.
With over 20 years of dedicated learning and practice,
Ray Wolfson and Irene Sherman are passionate Tai Chi practitioners.
According to them, 'Our growth within this art
continues through both teaching and personal practice.'

The classes offer a nonjudgmental and enjoyable environment, understanding that progress takes time and consistent practice.
